An environmental strategy at the heart of development

As key players in globalization and economic development, airports are now at the center of sustainability challenges.

Aware of its responsibility, Liege Airport has an ambitious vision: to evolve from a transit cargo airport into a leading provider of multimodal and sustainable logistics solutions.

This evolution places its development on a responsible, consistent, and sustainable path.

A structured strategic shift

Adopted by the Board of Directors and structured around eight fundamental pillars, this strategic shift lays the groundwork for controlled growth.

It enables us to combine logistics performance with social responsibility, while respecting the environment and the communities surrounding the platform.

As the operator of the airport complex, we fully acknowledge our environmental impact and integrate it into our day-to-day management.

A commitment to continuous improvement guides every action, with constant attention paid to minimizing environmental impacts.

Concrete measures already implemented

Several major investments have already been made:

  • Installation of a cogeneration unit
  • Installation of solar panels
  • Implementation of an environmental management system compliant with ISO 14001:2015
  • Achievement of Level 4 in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program
  • Implementation of a Collaborative Environmental Management (CEM) program
  • Voluntary commitment to publish an annual sustainability report based on the CSRD methodology

These initiatives reflect a clear commitment to anchoring the platform’s development in a measurable and responsible framework.

A vision incorporated into the 2023–2040 Master Plan

This roadmap covers the full scope of the platform’s activities and influence.

It is part of the 2023–2040 Master Plan, incorporating both operating expenses (OPEX) and capital expenditures (CAPEX).

A long-term commitment

Environmental policy serves as a key driver of transformation for the platform.

It reflects a clear commitment to driving positive change for aviation, the region, and the planet.

The environmental policy strengthened by the ACA

Led by ACI – Airport Council International, the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program is the global benchmark for managing airport CO₂ emissions.

Structured in several levels, it supports a step-by-step approach, from measuring to reducing emissions, all the way to engaging the broader ecosystem.

This certification recognizes the actions taken, enables progress to be tracked, and strengthens environmental credibility among partners.

Steady progress within the ACA program

2010 – Level 1

One year after the program was launched, Liege Airport achieved Level 1 by quantifying and verifying its carbon emissions.

2018 – Level 2

The platform has achieved Level 2, thanks in particular to investments in renewable energy, improvements in building energy efficiency, and the transition to a greener vehicle fleet, resulting in a significant reduction in emissions.

October 2022 – Collective Commitment

Liege Airport has officially entered into a partnership with its key on-site stakeholders to implement joint action plans aimed at reducing emissions from all activities within the airport community.

January 2023 – Level 3

Liege Airport has achieved Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation. This international and independent certification confirms the measures taken to encourage the airport’s key stakeholders to reduce their emissions as well.

2025 - Level 4: "Transformation"

In 2025, Level 4 of the ACA was achieved, confirming that the company’s CO₂ emission reduction targets are aligned with global climate commitments, including the Paris Agreement.

The scope of the calculation was also expanded to include more indirect emissions: ground operations, employee travel, visitors, trucks, and partners’ energy consumption.

How did Liege Airport manage to do that?

Liege Airport has expanded the scope of its carbon inventory by including more indirect emissions, such as those generated by ground operations, travel to and from the site (employees, visitors, trucks), and energy consumption by third parties.

A structured plan to reduce emissions

As part of this certified initiative, a Carbon Management Plan has been developed to structure our emissions reduction efforts.

This Plan outlines the actions to be implemented for Scopes 1 and 2 (direct and indirect energy-related emissions), with a long-term goal aligned with carbon neutrality.

An action plan has also been defined in collaboration with the platform’s key partners (the Stakeholder Engagement Plan).

It details the measures collectively implemented to reduce emissions at the site level, notably through fleet electrification, energy optimization of buildings, and raising awareness of more sustainable modes of transportation.
