Liege Airport's Environmental Policy

Airports, as key players in globalization and economic development, are now at the heart of sustainable development issues.

Aware of its responsibility, Liege Airport has set an ambitious vision: to evolve from a transit cargo airport into a leading provider of multimodal and sustainable logistics solutions.

This evolution sets its development on a responsible and sustainable path.

A Structured
Strategic Shift Approved by its Board of Directors and built around eight fundamental pillars, this strategic shift sets Liege Airport on a development path that combines logistical performance with social responsibility, while respecting the environment and the surrounding communities.

As the operator of the airport facility, Liege Airport fully acknowledges its environmental impact and places continuous improvement at the heart of its management.

Concrete actions already implemented
Several major investments have already been made:

  • Installation of a cogeneration unit
  • Installation of photovoltaic panels
  • Implementation of an environmental management system compliant with ISO 14001:2015
  • Achievement of Level 4 in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program
  • Implementation of a CEM (Collaborative Environmental Management)
  • Voluntary commitment to publish an annual sustainability report based on the CSRD methodology

These initiatives reflect a clear commitment to anchoring the airport’s development in a measurable and responsible framework.

An environmental roadmap structured around 6 priorities
The environmental roadmap is based on six major themes:

  • CO₂ emissions (decarbonization)
  • Noise pollution
  • Biodiversity
  • Air quality
  • Soil, surface water, and groundwater
  • Mobility

For each of these areas, specific objectives are defined, a roadmap is followed, and performance indicators are used to assess progress.

A vision integrated into the 2023–2040
Master Plan This roadmap covers the full spectrum of Liege Airport’s actions and influence. It is fully aligned with the 2023–2040 Master Plan, incorporating both operating expenses (OPEX) and capital expenditures (CAPEX).

A Sustainable Commitment Liege
Airport’s environmental policy serves as a key driver of transformation, reflecting a strong commitment to steering positive change for aviation, the region, and the planet.

Liege Airport and Airport Carbon Accreditation

The Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, which is structured in several levels, was developed by ACI – Airport Council International, the global association of airports.

It aims to encourage airports to reduce their CO₂ emissions and their carbon footprint. The efforts undertaken are officially recognized through the award of certification.

Steady progress within the ACA program

2010 – Level 1
One year after the program’s launch, Liege Airport achieved Level 1 by quantifying and verifying its carbon emissions.

2018 – Level 2
The airport achieves Level 2, thanks in particular to investments in renewable energy, improvements in the energy efficiency of its buildings, and the greening of its vehicle fleet, leading to an effective reduction in emissions.

October 11, 2022 – Collective
Commitment Liege Airport officially enters into a partnership with its key on-site stakeholders to implement joint action plans aimed at reducing emissions across all activities of the airport community.

January 2023 – Level 3
Liege Airport achieves Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation. This international and independent recognition confirms the measures taken to encourage the airport’s key stakeholders to reduce their emissions as well.

Better and better

2025 - Level 4: "Transformation"

In 2025, Liege Airport officially received its Level 4 ACA certificate.

This milestone means that its CO₂ emission reduction targets are aligned with global climate goals, particularly those of the Paris Agreement.

The airport has also expanded its emissions calculation to include more indirect activities: ground operations, employee commutes, visitors, and trucks, as well as partners’ energy consumption.

To achieve this, Liege Airport has expanded the scope of its carbon inventory by including more indirect emissions (Scope 3), such as those generated by ground operations, travel to and from the site (employees, visitors, trucks), and energy consumption by third parties.

At the same time, a Carbon Management Plan has been developed, outlining the concrete actions that will be implemented to continue reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions (direct and indirect emissions related to energy consumed by Liege Airport), with a long-term goal aligned with carbon neutrality.

Liege Airport has also formalized a “Stakeholder Engagement Plan,” developed in collaboration with the airport’s major partners. This plan details joint measures aimed at reducing emissions across the entire airport site. It includes, in particular, the continued electrification of the vehicle fleet, energy optimization of buildings, and raising awareness of more sustainable modes of transportation.
